Case Special - Episode 5
Case 4: Sekitani Jun
This Sekitani Jun case continues from the previous episode. Even though it seemed to have been solved, and labeled as a thing of the past, there is one thing that indicates that the case had not yet been completed - that is Chitanda's reaction. Her reaction would help determine if the case has been solved or not. The fact that she has not remembered what her uncle had told her back when she was young, just meant that there is more to the case, as the main motive of digging up this case has yet to be solve.
The episode picks up from the previous ending, when Houtaro and Satoshi was going home after the meeting at Chitanda's house. They were cycling together, and were talking about having rosy lifestyle. I think most people here noticed that since the beginning of this series, they kept talking about having rosy lifestyles. I'm not too sure if it's somewhat the point that flows throughout the show, but it certainly stopped after this case finished. So there must be some link between having a rosy lifestyle and this case.
So we start with Houtaro talking to his sister, Tomoe, on the phone in the morning. She called him, and they started talking about Sekitani Jun, which led to his sister asking a weird question; "Is the term 'Kanya fes' still a taboo?" This question led Houtaro to wonder why. Point: From this sentence, we know that the nickname 'Kanya Fes' has something to do with the incident back 45 years ago. Tomoe than talked a little about the incident that happened 45 years ago, which led Houtaro to finally realize his little mistake in his deductions. She mentioned the words 'tragedy', 'taboo' and 'can't believe it'. This all led Houtaro to realize that Sekitani Jun wasn't all that he thought he was.
His reasoning was that if Sekitani Jun was helping the students out of his own will, the incident would not have been called a 'tragedy', because Sekitani actually helped all the students in the school. It should have been referred too as something more glorious. Which led him to another question; was Sektani Jun's high school life really all that rosy? Most, if not all, high school students's life are rosy. But if have your life changed and altered because of a cultural festival, and didn't sacrifice yourself because you wanted too, would that still could have been called a 'rosy' lifestyle? Point: At this point of time, Houtaro probably realized that Sekitani Jun wasn't really a Hero.
He called the members of the classical Literature club back to school the next day to complete solving the case. Chitanda then mentioned here, to Houtaro, that there is something missing in this case (most likely because she didn't remember what her uncle had told her in the past). He than reassured her that the reason why he called them to school was to complete the unfinished case.
He starts out by pointing out the crucial points in Hyouka which tells us that what happened to Sekitani Jun was not a heroic tale, but something more tragic; which was the Kanji. (The same Kanji can be read many different ways.)
However, in order to know what kanji the writer was referring too, they have to ask the writer herself. In which, Houtaro actually found out that Kouriyama-Sensei was the writer. There were a few supporting points in his claim; firstly, her name. The Kanji for her name is rarely used, so it a low possibility that someone would have the same Kanji as her. Secondly, her age matches the time frame. (45 years back she was 15 years old).
Thirdly, her reaction when she heard that they were from the classical literature club. (Seen in episode 2 last part).
So after confirming her identity with her, Oreki brings the club members to the library as ask her about what had happened 45 years ago. Chitanda than explained that Sekitani Jun was her uncle, and about the reason as to why she wanted to know about what happened 45 years back. Oreki tells Kouriyama about his deduction and showed her the pieces of information that was found and which helped him with his deduction. Her reaction; it was spot on.
She than goes on to tell them about everything that had happened 45 years ago. When she had enrolled into the school, the cultural festival was a very well-known festival in that area. However, the student's activity had gone too far and was closer to a riot than a festival. This had resulted in making the principal and teachers shorten the number of days for the cultural festival, as they had believed that the school was a place for education. However, they didn't know that this would trigger such a strong reaction from the students.
The classical cultural club was set up as a main group to protest against the teachers. Everyone in the school agreed to the protest, however, they needed someone to step up and be the leader of this protest, but no one wanted to volunteer; they were afraid of the consequences. That's when Sekitani Jun came into the picture. He was the one that was selected for this unwanted role.
They protested to the teachers with every means they had; boycotting, posters, etc. One time it even went as far as setting up a camp fire at night to show their resolve. But a tragedy happened, some thing that wasn't meant to happen, the dojo caught fire and was burnt down. The police got involved in the matter because of this incident, but the school decided to resolve this issue by themselves. Students were called up to explain the incident. But none could testify to this incident; it was never meant to happen in the first place. This resulted in their decision to expel Sekitani Jun in respond to this incident. It was to set an example that the school would not tolerate this kind of behavior.
Before Sekitani left the school, he requested to name the club 'Hyouka'. Because of what happened to him, the members didn't oppose. The art on the cover of the anthology was in relation to the tragic event that had happened to him. The rabbits were the students, and the wolf was the teachers. The rabbit that is beeing bitten by the wolf was Sekitani Jun, while the other surrounding rabbits were the other students who stood by seeing him get expelled, but not helping or caring.
In episode 1, there was this constant mention of the old Dojo, and I guess this incident really speaks as to how important this was to the incident. If the incident had not happened, Sekitani would most probably not get expelled.
The whole incident about the anthology and Sekitani, was than later led to a bigger question: the meaning behind 'hyouka'. Only Oreki, at that point of time, know the meaning behind 'hyouka'. Hyouka translated to english (or well closest translation) would be 'Ice Cream'. Oreki than later pointed out that it was a stupid pun. 'Ice cream' = 'I Scream'. Which in this context means "I will not remain silent". Sekitani really left behind a huge message.
As for the term 'Kanya Fes' which was mentioned in episode 2, as actually written as 'Sekitani Jun' in Kanji but was read as 'Kanya fes'. As for the reason why this term was a taboo in the classical literature, was this incident itself. Because the only people who knew that Sekitani did not voluntarily become the leader, was the members of the classical literature club. As such, it became a taboo to use that term.
After all this, Chitanda finally remembers what her uncle said that made her cry that day (which in my opinion, was really dumb, and honestly I don't think that most people would cry over such trival matters). He told her that if you aren't strong, there would come a time where you wouldn't even be able to scream. Point: Links to the pun, which is needed in order to give her a reason to trigger her memory when Oreki said the meaning behind 'hyouka'. And than, you would be eaten alive. She than explains that she was afraid of being eaten alive, so she cried.
This concludes the Sekitani Jun case, which was build up since the beginning of Hyouka.
