Case Special - Episode 2
Case 3: History Book
This case was a little more towards the classical side, where the clues are laid out one by one, and Oreki slowly solves the case and come to a conclusion with each clues. However, throughout the whole episode, there were clues dropped for the cases in the next 2 to 3 episodes.
This case first starts out with Chintanda and Oreki trying to find the archives of the anthology, which is kind of like a book that the Classical club members write and compile every year for the school festival (a.k.a. Kanya Fes). They search the whole club room, but there was no sign of the archives. They than went to the library in search for it.
Here, they meet up with Ibara Mayaka, who is Oreki and Satoshi's middle school friend. And here, of course, they clearly established their connections and relations with Mayaka; Mayaka and Oreki was known to be the most popular couple back in their middle school, because they always fight with each other, while Mayaka is in love with Satoshi. (this was when Satoshi popped out of no where).
They ask Mayaka about the archives for the anthology, and she told them that it may be in the storeroom, but they have to wait for the librarian, who at that time was in a meeting. They than decided to wait for the meeting to be over. This was when Satoshi and Mayaka told Chitanda and Oreki about the case on the book.
Mayaka than took the book out to show Chitanda and Oreki. Chitanda pointed that the book was pretty, and Oreki thought that the book was way too huge. Clue number 1: book is pretty yet inconvenient.
It also turns out to be a history book about the school. Point: this is some what going to be related to the case later one in the episodes.
While checking to see who borrowed the book, they found out that they all borrowed the book in the morning and returned it on the same day they borrowed the book, every Friday. It also turns out that they were all girls from different classes. Clue number 2: the fact that they borrowed and return it on the same day and the fact that they were all from different class, but in the same year is a crucial clue to solving the case. From here, we can actually see the link between this 2nd clue and the 1st clue. The fact that the book was huge is also the reason why they all borrowed the book and return it to on the same day. Oreki than pushes away the fact that they were all girls as something of little relation to the case. In his theory, you can randomly pick 5 people in the school, and they can all be girls. It's also not unusual for girls to group together.
Mayaka than told them that they all borrow it during lunch break and return it after school. Clue number 3: the time frame is extremely important clue which helped Oreki progress with this case.
Oreki's conclusion with that 3rd clue: The time frame suggests that there was no time to read it in school, if you cut out all the lesson times. Conclusion: not for reading.
Since there is no time to read in school, how about at home? But since the 3rd clue tells us that they all return it after school, means that they didn't take it home. However, if their purpose is for reading, they'd just read it in the library, but that contradicts the fact that they all borrowed the book. Conclusion: not for reading.
Oreki laid down the possibilities of them reading the book, but came to a conclusion that the purpose for their borrow wasn't to read. From here he came out with two possible solution to satisfy the conditions (clues) so far:
Solution number one: They have nothing in common, but has some popular use on Friday.
Solution number 2: They're part of a group that uses this book, and takes turns to borrow the book.
They then tried to find out if solution 1 is actually possible by coming up with random theories. Satoshi suggest that it may be fortune telling; that if they borrow their school's history book on Friday than return it on the same day, it would bring them good luck. Oreki clearly thought this thinking was ridiculous, and told Satoshi that it was impossible because those fortune telling changes every week, and they borrowed the book continuously for 5 weeks straight. Conclusion: solution number 2 is right. Now that they know which direction to think along, they tried to find theories that would fit this solution. Oreki tried to get some theories out from the 3 others, but not no avail. (they all gave him ridiculous answers.)
Oreki than comes up with a random theory; maybe they use the book to convey a message some thing like if it's facing upwards it's a 'yes', if it's facing downwards it's a 'no'. Mayaka shots down that theory, showing him the return box; there was no way to tell if it's facing up or down if it's like that.
Chitanda than suddenly says that she smells something from the book; something like oil of somewhat. Clue 4: Oil smell. This was the clue which helped Oreki come out with the perfect theory for the solution that he thought of and to fit all the clues. He than asks Chitanda to go the art's room; where the answer lays there. Of course, Oreki had no intentions of going along, but Chitanda kind of forced him with her. Along the way, he explains his theory:
Since in the 3rd clue, Oreki came to a conclusion that the book was not for reading, whats left is that it should be used for lessons. This is where the 2nd clue comes in; because the five girls are all from different classes, it helped to narrow down to which class it was used in for.
In Japan, Gym and all the other various art classes are shared with different classes. (for to be specific, 3 classes). Now then, it becomes very obvious as to which class would require the use for that huge book. If you slowly think how the book can be used in these 4 classes, you would find that only one class has a need for such a book. Hint: 1st clue - the book is pretty.
Conclusion: For art class. This is where the oil smell came from; oil painting. In other words, the book is pretty and huge, so it was a perfect book to be used for painting, but since the book was huge, it's a hassle to bring it back home even though you can borrow it for 2 weeks, thus they would borrow during lunch time and return it after school.
Case 4: Sekitani Jun
A case that would be fully shown in episode 4 and 5; also another major case that has some link to the case in episode 3.
When Oreki and Chitanda went to the library in search for the anthology, Satoshi pops up. While talking about the anthology, Satoshi uses the term 'Kanya Fest' to call the school festival. Point: The term Kanya Fest has something to do with the incident in the Sekitani Jun's case. Oreki thought that Satoshi made up that term, but it turns out that all the seniors call the school festival 'Kanya Fest'. Satoshi tried to find out why it was called 'Kanya Fest', but could not find out the main reason. He than thought that it's probably a short from for Kamiyama Festival.
After solving the History Book case, they than ask the Librarian about the anthology. At first when they told her that they were from the Classic Literature Clue, she was shocked (though not very apparent). Point: This gave Oreki a clue to the fact that she was involved in the Sekitani Jun incident 45 years ago; in episode 5.
After finding out that there was no anthology in the library, Chitanda was acting a little strange, saying things like 'We're not going back empty-handed' and 'If it's Oreki I'm sure...' Point: From here we know that Chitanda wants Oreki to help her solve something. The clue to this is the reason why she joined the Classical Literature Club. When Oreki ask her why she wanted to join (in the first episode), and on many other occasions, she would reply "it's something personal". Point: They also made sure to emphasis that part, by having Oreki react to that sentence.
The next day, which was Sunday, Chitanda gave Oreki an unexpected call, saying that she would like to meet. Of course it was obvious it has something to do with Chitanda saying in the previous day (or earlier) 'We're not going back empty-handed' and 'If it's Oreki I'm sure...'.
After meeting in the cafe, Chitanda seems really reluctant to tell Oreki what she wanted to say. This caused Oreki to get a little upset and impatient, because it's against his energy conservation policy, causing Chitanda to explain herself. Which ended up giving Oreki the wrong impression; he thought that Chitanda was really going to confess to him. The rest continues in the next episode.
