Case Special - Episode 3
Case 4: Sekitani Jun
Continuation from where we left off at episode 2, case 4. So Chitanda finally tells Oreki about what she wanted him to help her with. She wanted Oreki to find out what her uncle told her before he went missing. She explains:
Her uncle went missing in India 7 years ago. When Chitanda was still a kid, she was close with her uncle, because he would always have an answer to all the questions she asks.
She later than found out that her uncle was from the classical literature club back in high school. She was curious, and asked something about the club. That was the only time that her uncle didn't answer her. She kept bugging him until he finally gave her an answer. But after hearing that answer, she started crying. Why did she cry? She didn't know. Oddly, her uncle didn't comfort her.
She than forgotten all about this incident until middle school. Point: Most probably at the time where they decided that he went missing for too long and announced him dead. So when she went high school, she decided to uncover the truth; she went to the same high school as her uncle and even joined the classical literature club in search for the truth. She asked around in the staff room for anyone that remembers her uncle, but it has been 45 years since her uncle graduated from high school, there was no one that knew him.
So she went to Oreki to help her uncover the truth behind her tears. Oreki was reluctant at first because he felt that it was too huge a responsibility to bear. But later he agreed to help her, after seeing her desperate face.
Fast forward to the back of the episode: after case 5 has happened (scroll down if you want to read that first). They found the anthology, and Chitanda remembered that she asked her uncle something about the anthology.
Oreki than open and read what was inside; "The cultural festival is upon us, once again. It's been a year since Sekitani-senpai graduated. In a single year, he turned from a hero into a ledges. Unfortunately, all our disputes and sacrifices, and even his smile are starting to be covered in the sands of time. Actually, it's probably for the best. It mustn't be remembered, because it was not a heroic tale in any way. All objective accounts are gone, and everything gradually turned into a piece of classical literature from a historical perspective. As our records may one day become a piece of classical literature to the readers of the future." Point: From here, with the mention of the cultural festival and Sekitani Jun, we can safely say that what happened to Sekitani Jun 45 years ago, had something to do with the cultural festival.
While reading the anthology, the animation changes to show different parts of the school. This image is definitely not redundant. It shows a relation to the parts in which Oreki was reading. The one that probably has the most to do with this whole case is probably the picture above. Point: This gym was also mentioned in episode 1. So it must be of some significance to the case.
After reading the whole passage, the animation shifts back to show the name of the person who wrote this; Kouriyama Youko. Honestly, most people would see this as just something normal and not pay much attention to it. But really, if there is no significance, of any sort, to the case at hand, I don't think that they would bother to make Oreki read that thing out and also to show in the animation. But of course, at this point it may mean otherwise.
Basically, in this episode, the background information about Sekitani Jun, Chitanda's uncle, is laid. The final piece of clue to finishing and ratifying the whole case is also there. But there is probably not enough to get people to think about what happened 45 years ago. We need more information as to what really happened in school 45 years ago.
Case 5: Anthology
So this case starts with Oreki's sister's letter. I'm not gonna type out everything she said in the letter, because it's too troublesome. So basically all we need to know is that
1. The anthology is in the club room.
2. Which is in the locker, that is not locked.
After telling the club members that the anthology is in the club room, Chitanda panicked because, if you remembered, in the previous episode they search the whole club room and there was no trace of an locker. Oreki than explained that his sister graduated 2 years ago, I don't know if the club rooms change every 2 years or what but Oreki said that the club room changed when his sister graduated, which explains why the anthology was not in that particular club room they were in. Surprisingly, Oreki went to ask their adviser, before hand, where the anthology was and found out that it was the biology storage room.
Being dragged by Chitanda to the biology storage room, Oreki notices this pair of strange boxes at either side of the walls. Point: This is obviously capture your attention. Some people may already know what this is.
They reach the storage room and Chitanda tries to open the door, locked. Point: It may not really be strange if you see it this way, but is it normal for a club room to be locked? She than knocks and steps back.
A few moments later, a club member opens the door and walks out, but he immediately closes it. Here, we would also not really suspect anything, because it can be normal for people to have a habit of closing their doors. Or it may be because in many animes, we see that character closing their doors after they step out. Point: However, this actually shows how he doesn't want people to go into the club room.
After a few moments, Oreki smells something strong from him, and conclude it's spray an deodorant; a strong smell indeed. Point: Weird for Oreki to be pointing out something like that, this just shows that the smell has something to do with the case that is coming.
Later Chitanda than called his name, Togaito Masashi. He was confused, obviously he doesn't remember her. But if we flash back to the first episode, we all knows that Chitanda has a good memory and can remember everyone's name the first time she meets them. After explaining that she was from the Chitanda family, who knows Togaito's fmaily, he started to panic. Point: This just shows that if anything happens, he really does not want Chitanda family to know about it (his secret). But for now, most people can probably see that he is acting really strange.
While explaining about the whole thing, it was shown that he started wiping his palms on this trousers; this shows that he is nervous about something. If you observe closely about the timing, you would be able to tell that he is nervous about people going into the club room. Because he only started to wipe when Chitanda mention about the archives being in the biology store room.
After much convincing, Togaito finally gave and allowed them into the club room.
When the step into the class room, the screen shows 3 different scenes, in which 2 of the scenes are related to the case. The first one is this picture above. Honestly, in that few seconds that they show this scene, which would you look at first. Personally, I actually just stared at the boxed of colour markers. So I actually think that they should have some how made what they want us to catch, more eye catching. Point: That white thing with an antenna sticking out is actually what they wanted us to focus on.
The next scene is the make shift table with the paper on top, weighted down by many other stuffs. Is it strange for them to have it like that? No. But I'm sure what cross most people's mind at this point in time is "The paper looks like it's going to fly away anytime." But than you wouldn't think too much about it, because it may just be another random scene in the anime. Point: Yes it has something to do with the paper flying away. I guess they did a good job in hiding this point, because they mixed in a random scene that didn't have anything to do with the case, but was still an information to the viewers later on in a bit of relation to the Sekitani Jun's case.
The next scene that proceeds with Oreki clearly observing the fan, to be more specific, the position and the strength of the fan. This just kind of tells the viewers where the wind, that is making the paper on the table flap, is coming from. Because it may be so that the wind may be inevitably caused by natural wind. However, this just kind of prove that it was made purposely this way. Point: It strengthens Oreki's theory.
Chitanda and Mayaka than starts searching for the archives in the whole room, they found nothing. I'm sure at this point Oreki is suspecting something. He than asks Togaito if there was anything taken out from the club room when they were shifting classrooms. Answer was "a few cardboard boxes." This tells Oreki that the safe box is in the room. Point: Judging from the structure of the room, the only place left for the safe box is within all those cardboard boxes which was used to make the makeshift table. Oreki knew the position of the safe box, but in order to ensure Togaito that he was not going to tell anyone about his secret, and to conserve more energy, Oreki choose to blackmail.
Honestly, at this point, for people who didn't really catch much, it may start to get a little weird, before anything is exposed.
Oreki than linked all the clues together:
1. flapping paper that was right in front of the widely opened window.
2. The fan that was set to the maximum, right in front of the paper.
3. School uniform laid on the table. Though they didn't show this in the first part, it's kind of like the decisive thing that kind of put everything together.
Oreki than suggest, to Togaito, that they ask the teacher in charge to help search the area; giving the reason that the room is huge. Togaito panicked; he refused to allow them to call the teacher, stating that they didn't want anything to be messed up.
Oreki said a little "bingo" before continuing to talk. He said that they would be going to the library first, and that if he (Togaito) saw the safe box, he hope that he would bring it to the geography preb room (which is their club room), and that the door is open. Togaito was clearly mad; he knew that Oreki knew his secret. Point: I'll explain what I meant earlier on when I said that Oreki use this method to tell Togaito that he wouldn't expose his secret. They then walked out of the room, and found a spot to wait.
Oreki than asks Chitanda what the Togaito family was famous for. Point: This just show that the status of the family had something to do with Togaito hiding his secret. Chitanda replied that the Togaito family has many people working in the field of education. Point: This just shows how Togaito cannot oppose the school in anyway if he doesn't want to tarnish his family's name.
They go back to the club room after about 5 minutes, and the anthology was there on the table. Chitanda and Mayaka were clueless as to how this happened. Oreki than explained to Mayaka step by step, telling her to keep this a secret.
Firstly, when he first opened the door, he was clearly panicking; this can been seen from the fact that he closed the door the moment he stepped out of the room, and his reaction when he found out about Chitanda's family.
Secondly, with the position that the paper (manuscripts) where, and the fact that the fan was blowing directly at the manuscripts at full power, suggest that he didn't have a choice but to actually open the windows wide and the fan at full blast. Why? (more conclusive evidence below)
Thirdly, Togaito actually set up sensors to warn him if people were walking towards the club room. Oreki knew this from the sensors outside the club room (the strange boxes), and the white antenna thingy on the table was the alarm.
Fourthly, the fact that he smelled like air fresheners or spray on deodorant. From these 4 things, we can tell that Togaito didn't want anyone to go into the club room, which means that he is doing something that is breaking the school rules, in the club room. The fact that he opened the windows wide, the fan at full blast would mean that he is trying to get rid of a smell (which kind of explains why he left his uniform on top of the table). He also needed to know if there was anyone coming, so that he could try to get rid of the smell as much as possible, by spraying air fresheners. This led to one conclusion; smoking.
As to the reason why he was so desperate, was because of his family name. Since his family is famous for being in the education sector, he could not be caught doing anything illegal activities, especially in school.
As for the anthology, the reason why he didn't tell them about the safe box, even though he knew where it was, was because he probably had hidden his cigarettes inside. So to add up, Oreki indirectly told Togaito that in exchange for not telling anyone about him smoking within school campus, he had to take the anthology to their club room. This way, they wouldn't have any evidence about him smoking (since they didn't actually see him smoke or see his cigaretes).
